If your origin story isn’t moody and dramatic, we don’t need to see it! In the first trailer for Todd Phillips’s Joker, occasional Jesus and action hero Joaquin Phoenix looks exactly that: Phoenix plays stand-up comedian Arthur Fleck, who’s disenchanted that his career isn’t on the upswing. His disappointment leads him to Gotham City’s criminal underworld, in a tone that really does look part Taxi Driver and part Cape Fear. Zazie Beetz is playing the love interest, Robert De Niro is playing a talk-show host, and Frances Conroy, Bill Camp, and Marc Maron have supporting roles. “I used to think that my life was a tragedy,” Fleck begins. “But now I realize it’s a comedy.” See Joker in theaters October 4.
