Looks like one of the most dysfunctional families of 2019 will be returning for another season. Netflix has renewed The Umbrella Academy, with production beginning this summer in Toronto. All seven main cast members are set to reprise their roles. (No word yet on the fate of Mary J. Blige’s well-dressed villain, Cha-Cha.) The second season will be ten episodes and each an hour long, just like the first. Steve Blackman will return as showrunner and executive producer.
Originally a comic-book series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy follows seven siblings, all born on the same day in 1989 by seven different women in what can only be described as the weirdest worldwide immaculate conception. A billionaire adopts the superpowered kids and turns them into a crime-fighting group called the Umbrella Academy, complete with masks, uniforms, and action figures. Now bitter and unsuccessful adults, the estranged six remaining members reunite to bury their not-so-dear old dad, who died under mysterious circumstances. (Spoiler: They didn’t kill him, even if they wanted to.) When they hear of the impending apocalypse, the siblings must travel through time, space, and even the afterlife to save the world.
