Giving The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air the gritty reboot treatment sounds like a full-on College Humor sketch. In the hands of filmmaker Morgan Cooper, however, it’s a griping family drama about class, race and, of course, living with your auntie and uncle in Bel-Air. The sitcom’s star loved Cooper’s trailer for his recently viral (fake) Fresh Prince reboot Bel-Air so much, he sat down with the creator for an interview, an interview that basically sounds like how Will Smith plans to pitch this idea as a series.
“This is the first time that I heard something and I was like, ‘Yo, that’s an idea that is brilliant’,” Smith told Cooper in a recent interview uploaded to the actor’s YouTube. “The dramatic version of these ideas means that you can use existing storylines, but it’s not going to seem like you are redoing an episode because the storyline’s going to be brand-new from a dramatic perspective.” Well, if anyone could bring a dramatic retelling of Fresh Prince to television, it’s probably international superstar and multi-millionaire Will Smith. Though you might have to sate your thirst for the Carlton dance with the original series. Hard to imagine that one making the cut.
