The second season of Big Little Lies has already given us the song of the summer, fake teeth, and philosophical ruminations about the art of extending a miniseries. But mostly, Meryl Streep. Or now, Meryl Streep quietly taunting Reese Witherspoon with a tasteful crucifix necklace. Such a moment occurs in the show’s second episode (which aired last night), where Streep’s character sizes up her tiny foe. “When I was very young my family just moved and I was going to a brand-new school, and I was especially scared. My father gave me the best advice. He said, ‘Mary Louise, you just scout the bully. Make friends with her,’” she explains. “On your awesome days, I suspect you are a godsend. But on your bad days, decidedly less so.” And what retort does she get in response? Turn up the volume and listen.
