“Do you know what I hold in my hand? Absolute power.” Boy, you don’t want to think you’ll end up cheering on a beheading, but with Helen Mirren on the throne, you have to admit the thought might cross your mind. In the first trailer for HBO’s good-looking period drama Catherine the Great, Helen Mirren’s 18th century Russian empress molds her country into a future world power alongside lover and military commander (emphasis on the lover, based on this trailer) Grigory Potemkin, played by a scarred, mustachioed Jason Clarke. The kind of woman who would slap Mary Louise’s cross necklace right off her chin, we’re already looking forward to Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep squaring off during awards season for their respect HBO roles. Catherine the Great will premiere sometime this fall.
