After a few years of waiting for Robert Eggers’s follow-up to The Witch, the first trailer for 2019’s The Lighthouse is finally here. It stars Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson as lighthouse keepers (or wickies) on some mysterious New England island in the 1890s. Pattinson’s character is supposed to be on watch for only a few weeks, but “the damp and the slog” get to him and he begins to lose his mind. “He murders a seagull. He screams about wanting a steak so badly he ‘would fuck it.’ He masturbates furiously to a mermaid figurine. And somehow, things get much, much weirder from there,” as Vulture’s Rachel Handler reported from this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where The Lighthouse premiered. Based on this trailer, Pattinson also seems to get in a fistfight with an octopus wrapped around his neck. We can’t say for sure what’s going on there, but it’s probably best to go into this film as blind as possible anyway. Catch the movie in theaters starting October 18.
