Hong Kong actor Simon Yam, known in the West for his role in 2003’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider — The Cradle of Life, was stabbed onstage at an event in Zhongshan in southern China on Saturday. 64-year-old Yam is a hugely popular star in Asia, an award-winning actor who is also a champion of the Asian film industry. According to Variety, the attack occurred at the opening of a Beijing Easyhome building-materials company, where Yam was appearing as a guest. Videos of the incident being shared on social media show an unknown man rushing the stage, stabbing Yam in the stomach, and slashing his arm before security can intervene. Yam appeared to remain conscious throughout the incident, and he is currently in the hospital recovering. “The knife wound to his abdominal area caused minor damage to his internal organs which has been repaired,” his manager, Lester Mo Gee-man, said in a statement. “The injuries to his right hand have also been treated. He is resting and in a stable condition.” The attacker was taken into custody at the scene, but his identity and motivation have not been released.
