The best kind of prize is a surprise: Tom Cruise showed up at Comic-Con’s Hall H today, and unveiled the trailer for his long-gestating Top Gun sequel. When we catch up with the infamous Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the trailer for Top Gun: Maverick, he’s still … just a captain. When Ed Harris asks him why, after all these years, he has a need for speed but is not ascending in the ranks, Maverick scoffs: “It’s one of life’s mysteries, sir.” (Some of life’s other mysteries: Where did Aunt May get her Spider-Man: Far From Home jeans, why was Anthony Ramos’s Star Is Born character listening to “Yonkers” of all songs after the “Shallow” show, and how long will “Old Town Road” stay at No. 1?)
When you really think about it, 34 years isn’t that long: Lady Gaga and Robert Pattinson were being born, Ronald Reagan was president, Salt-N-Pepa released their debut album, Hot, Cool & Vicious. It’s just enough time for Maverick to start training a gaggle of new recruits with razor-sharp jawlines: Miles Teller (playing Goose’s son), Glen Powell, and Manny Jacinto. Top Gun: Maverick also stars Ed Harris, Jon Hamm, and Jennifer Connelly. See it in theaters June 26, 2020.
