Let the awards-season trailer binge commence. Staying true to his word that he, gasp, will use scripts for his films going forward, Terrence Mallick’s A Hidden Life is a World War II–adjacent drama that depicts the true story of an Austrian peasant farmer named Franz Jägerstätter (August Diehl) who refuses to pledge loyalty and fight for the Nazis. “What’s happened to our country? We’re killing innocent people, raiding other countries, preying on the weak,” our faithful hero contemplates in the trailer. “If our leaders our evil, what does one do?” A quick Google search can tell you whether the Nazis follow through with their threats of execution to Franz, or you can see it all unfold for yourself when A Hidden Life is released on December 13.
