On Friday, Instinct creator Michael Rauch announced on Twitter that the CBS crime drama won’t be returning for a third season. Based on a James Patterson novel, the series stars Alan Cumming as Dylan Reinhart, a former CIA operative-author-professor whose expertise on abnormal psychology helps him solve crimes as an NYPD consultant. The character is touted as the first openly gay lead on a network drama. There are three episodes left in season two, which Vulture TV critic Matt Zoller Seitz called, “the most frustrating show on broadcast TV this summer … because it’s obvious that the writers, actors, and filmmakers are itching to make a weirder, more enjoyable and original series than circumstances allow.” The series finale airs August 25.
