If your origin story isn’t moody and dramatic, we don’t need to see it! In the trailer for Todd Phillips’s Joker, occasional Jesus and action hero Joaquin Phoenix gives us one last advanced look at the troubled comedian Arthur Fleck. He’s disenchanted that his career isn’t on the upswing, and that disappointment leads him to Gotham City’s criminal underworld. The tone really does seem to capture that part Taxi Driver, part Cape Fear split that Phillips was aiming for, which really makes for something harrowing! Zazie Beetz is playing the love interest, Robert De Niro is playing a talk-show host, and Frances Conroy, Bill Camp, and Marc Maron have supporting roles. “I used to think that my life was a tragedy,” Fleck begins. “But now I realize it’s a comedy.” See Joker in theaters October 4.
