The movie Freaks takes a small-scale approach to big world-building. Set mostly inside a run-down house, the story follows a young girl named Chloe (Lexy Kolker) whose dad (Emile Hirsch) is keeping her locked down at home so no one from the world outside can hurt her. He tries to teach her to be “normal” so she can live discreetly in society one day, but co-writers and directors Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky keep the truth of why hidden inside a mystery-box-style plot structure that leaves you wondering if the danger is real or if Chloe’s dad is the actual threat here. Grace Park plays a government agent tasked with keeping an eye on the so-called abnormals, and Bruce Dern co-stars as Chloe’s first real link to the outside world in this long-fuse sci-fi thriller. Freaks arrives in theaters on September 13.
