Jharrel Jerome Thanks ‘the Exonerated Five’ During When They See Us Emmy Speech

Jharrel Jerome gave a blistering performance in When They See Us as Korey Wise, one of the five men who were convicted of raping and assaulting a 28-year-old investment banker named Trisha Meili in 1989, but whose convictions were eventually vacated in 2002. Jerome was clearly overwhelmed when he took the stage to receive his award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series, but gathered himself to thank his mom, Ava DuVernay, and “the Exonerated Five” — Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Antron McCray, and Wise — who were in attendance at the ceremony and rose to give the actor a standing ovation.
