Every time we hit a new level of perfection, something comes along to transcend it all. Lana Del Rey covered Ariana Grande’s “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” on BBC Radio 1’s “Live Lounge,” and everything about the video is golden, from Del Rey’s eyeliner to the fact that she’s reading the lyrics from her phone. It’s not a complete transformation, like how her cover of Sublime’s “Doin’ Time” sounds like an entirely different song. Instead, it sounds a little like Ariana Grande and a little like something off Lust for Life. So the perfect combination, really. The two musicians are mutual fans, likely because they both love a long song title. “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” (seven words!) has nothing on “hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have — but i have it” (16 words!), to be fair, and Del Rey gets extra points for the em-dash. Grande, Del Rey, and Miley Cyrus recently worked together on a song for the new Charlie’s Angels movie. So what we need is a pop version of supergroup boygenius, and we need it ASAP. Who do we have to tweet at?
