Alyssa Limperis Has Figured Out How to Boil Cake

Thanks to the coronavirus, comedians are now trapped at home like the rest of us, so we decided that while we’re all self-quarantining, we’d do something a little different from our usual “Follow Friday” column. Instead of interviewing up-and-coming comedians we love on Twitter, we’re going live on Instagram every week to check in on some of our favorite people in comedy to get a firsthand look into how they’re handling the pandemic. So welcome to our new version of the column, now titled “Follow (From a Safe Distance) Friday.”

This week, I sat down with fellow Chatty Cathy Alyssa Limperis (Conan, Last Week Tonight, hilariously honoring her mom, Linda, all over the internet) to hear about how she’s doing while in the confines of the COVID-19 quarantine. She told us how she discovered a new cooking method by accidentally sous-vide-ing a cake, gave us some poignant insight into what the future of the comedy biz might look like, and got a little nostalgic about the era of flip phones and Sidekicks: “Texts that now you would get and be like, ‘That’s 100 percent a virus. Do not do it! Do not do it!’ that’s how we used to get [ringtones] back in the day.”
