Every Rom-Com Needs a Good Plot Twist

Every Rom-Com Needs a Good Plot Twist

Picture this: You’re watching a romantic comedy. The main couple has finally gotten together after an adorable meet cute…but you check the time left in the movie, and there are still 30 minutes to go. It’s time for the classic rom-com plot twist. Maybe it’s an obstacle the couple has to overcome — say, a case of mistaken identity, the return of an ex, or a dream job offer all the way across the country. Or, maybe the twist is that the couple realizes they’re not right for each other, and they decide to break things off in the end. Whether low-stakes or high-stakes, plot twists are part of the wide world of rom-com tropes, just like the meet cute or the girl next door.

In celebration of the plot twist — and of all of our favorite rom-com staples — we partnered with Cointreau, the iconic orange liqueur, to bring you a love story of our own. In episode two of our rom-com, comedian Simone Norman and mixologist Greg Titian play a game of cat and mouse next door to each other, blasting their music louder and louder. When they realize they’re both just hanging out alone instead of hosting a raucous party (who’s actually having parties these days, anyways?), they share a cocktail and a sweet conversation. We filmed our rom-com at the Refinery Hotel, and below we’ve included the recipe (courtesy of Cointreau) for the drink that Titian and Norman enjoy together, The Spicy Margarita.

Cointreau and tequila come together to make a perfect couple in The Spicy Margarita. So pour yourself a drink, curl up, and queue up your favorite movie. And if you’re in the mood to watch one of the best rom-com plot twists around, Cointreau and Vulture are also bringing you a free screening of Moonstruck on March 11 — just RSVP here to reserve your spot and a kit of supplies to make your own spicy marg. (Plus, don’t miss the two other episodes in this series: The Meet Cute and The Girl Next Door.)

(Double recipe for two cocktails.)
