Jodie Foster Isn’t New to This. She’s True Detective.

You don’t need to be a hard-bitten investigator with loose morals to get the truth about True Detective: Night Country, the fourth entry in the anthology series. HBO debuted the official trailer for the upcoming season on December 4. Set in Alaska during a period of 24-plus hours of night, the show features its first female detective duo, who are reunited after six years apart to solve a cold case. Detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) are investigating the disappearances of six men from the Tsalal Arctic Research Station in Ennis, Alaska, who were found as bodies frozen into giant blocks of flesh. The only clue lies in a spiral tattoo found on a victim’s forehead that matches the graffiti in an abandoned building. “Burnt eyeballs, self-inflicted wounds,” Danvers says. “Those men died before they froze.” Tensions run high as bodies are pulled from lakes and found on ice rinks. A waitress has a breakdown on the job. Police beat up locals who are protesting against a silver mine. “The night country, it takes us,” says Navarro. “One by one.”

Issa López (Tigers Are Not Afraid) directs True Detective: Night Country. Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Isabella Star LaBlanc, Aka Niviâna, Anna Lambe, Joel D. Montgrand, Christopher Eccleston, and John Hawkes star in the new season. Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) is executive producer. Night Country unthaws on January 14, 2024.

Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated Barry Jenkins’s involvement with the show. He is executive producer.
